We are pleased to announce the official submission of 16S and 18SV4 sequencing datasets to the public repositories under BioProject Accession PRJNA1491464. This initiative is part of the broader National Biodiversity Future Centre NCBI umbrella project (Grant ID CN_00000033, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research).
Registered on July 7, 2026, this data submission reinforces the ongoing commitment of The Italian Observatory Network of Marine Biodiversity to open science and high-resolution environmental monitoring.

About the Monitoring Initiative
Launched in January 2024, The Italian Observatory Network of Marine Biodiversity support omics technologies to study, explore, and monitor the ecological richness of Mediterranean marine ecosystems.
The project regularly generates comprehensive monthly datasets spanning surface and bottom water columns across distinct size fractions. Sampling is actively maintained at four core marine stations within the Italian LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) network:
- Portofino Promontory (Ligurian Sea)
- Meda Senigallia Station (Central Adriatic Sea)
- Gulf of Naples (Central Tyrrhenian Sea)
- Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea)
Environmental & Scientific Relevance
The released data encompass high-resolution metabarcoding (including 16S V4V5, 18S V4 and in the future 18S V9, ITS2, COI and virome) alongside metagenomic (WGS) profiles. By capturing both microbial communities and broader trophic biodiversity, this resource delivers foundational insights for marine conservation, ecological modeling, and biodiversity management in a changing climate.
